In the evening there are special parties, and sometimes couples go to restaurants.
On the top of the Empire State Building in New York there are red lights on this day.
School children decorate their classrooms with bright red paper hearts. They exchange gifts, sweets, flowers or "valentines."
The origin of this celebration could be this one: Claudius, the Roman emperor didn’t permit marriages because he needed lost of men in his army. Valentine (a Christian priest) used to marry couples secretly. One day he was sent to prison and executed in AD 270. He wrote a letter to his love and he signed it “from your Valentine”.
