   MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. was born in Atlanta, the USA,  in 1929 . He went to schools only for black people. He wanted to be a minister like his father. He studied religion. He married and had four children. He read a book by Gandhi about equal rights. He organised marches to protest against discrimination. He went to prison twenty-nine times. He gave his famous speech “I have a dream” in front of thousands of people in Washington D.C. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Somebody killed him in 1968.

MAHATMA GANDHI. Mohatma means “Great soul” in Sanskrit. He was born in Porbandar (India) on 2nd October, 1869. At the age of  13 he married Kasturba, a girl the same age. They had four children. He went  to London and studied law when he was 18. He spent some years in South Africa as a lawyer. He stayed there for twenty-one years In 1915 he returned to India, where he became a leader. His philosophy was base don love and nonviolence. He was arrested many times by the British and spent seven years in prison. India got its Independence in 1947 and was divided into India and Pakistan. Gandhi helped Hindus and Muslims living together in peace. On 30th January, 1948 was assassinated by a fanatic.

He was in prison for opposing the white government’s apartheid policies. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. In 1994 he was the first black president of South Africa.

She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She died in 1997.
